ELECTIVE CARDIOVERSION

Cardioversion is a brief procedure where a low energy electrical shock is delivered to the heart through pads placed on the chest and back. This procedure converts an abnormal heart rhythm back to a normal rhythm. Most elective or “non-emergency” cardioversions are performed to treat atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. This type of heart rhythm is irregular and frequently too fast.

PROCEDURE
This procedure will be done at the Center for Cardiac Care. An IV will be started and you will receive sedation. Your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels will be monitored throughout the procedure. A nurse and your doctor will be with you.

Cardioversion takes a very short time and is generally painless. Once you are fully awake, you will be able to eat or drink. If you are an outpatient, the timing of your discharge usually relates to how quickly your sedation wears off.

Following cardioversion, it is important to take your medications as prescribed and report any symptoms if they occur.

PREPARATION

  • Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the test.
  • Check with your nurse regarding medicines to be taken or not taken the day before and the morning of the procedure.

INFORMATION FOR OUTPATIENTS
