BLEEDING PRECAUTIONS

If you are taking a blood thinner or have a condition that puts you at increased risk for bleeding, you should remember the following information.

NOTIFY YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU:

  • Experience bleeding from a cut that is not easily controlled by applying direct pressure with your fingers
  • Notice a significant increase in bruises not caused by injury
  • Have excessive bleeding from your nose or gums
  • Experience blood in your urine (red or dark brown in color) or blood in your stool (red or black in color)
  • Cough or vomit blood
  • Have abnormal or excessive vaginal bleeding
  • Experience severe or prolonged headaches or unusual pain or swelling
  • Notice feelings of weakness, dizziness, or fainting
  • Notice changes in mental alertness, vision, or ability to speak
  • Are unable to take your medicine
  • Are starting a new prescription or over-the-counter medicine
  • Have a significant change in your diet or health
  • Take or are planning to take vitamins, diet supplements, or drink alcohol
  • Are planning a dental or medical procedure

AVOID:

  • Contact sports or activities that may cause falls or injury
  • Sharp objects, such as razors
  • Stiff-bristled toothbrushes
  • Constipation, rectal suppositories or enemas
  • Medicine by injection, unless absolutely necessary
